Want a Great Recording?

Check out your equipment ahead of time. Before recording, check out your equipment to make sure it’s working properly, whether it’s a handheld device or a sophisticated recording system run through your company’s computer or phone network. Also make sure you have fresh batteries in that handheld device. The last thing you want is to finally connect with that needed interview and then after the interview find out your device didn’t record anything.

Use an external microphone. If you’re using a handheld other similar recording device, make sure to use a good external microphone. And if that recorder is sitting in the middle of a table to record a focus group or other similar panel, make sure that a conference or omnidirectional microphone is used, otherwise the person sitting farthest away may be too faint to hear clearly.

Quiet atmosphere. Although a completely silent area is often not feasible, try to record in as quiet an atmosphere as possible. Loud background noises such as televisions, traffic, other conversations, or even a very windy day can make it difficult to hear the voices you recorded. (If you're interviewing outside or the person you're interviewing over the phone is outside, be aware that the sound of wind comes across a lot louder on a recording than you would think!) This can cause more time and expense when the recording is transcribed and you may also be completely unable to hear important parts of the discussion.

Control your groups. I know, I know, when you get a group of people discussing something—especially if it’s a hot topic—they can get really passionate and start taking overtop of each other. But it’s vitally important to keep that to a minimum as it’s very hard to understand overlapping conversations on a recording, sometimes impossible.
